Performing Arts at The Boswells School The Boswells School is a specialist Performing Arts School and College Our reputation within the Performing Arts is second to none. Students are given opportunities to practise and perfect skills in Dance, Drama and Music in class as well as through extra curricular clubs, workshops, residencies and access to our outstanding facilities. As a result our students are frequently invited to participate in community projects and festivals. Performing Arts subjects are taught from Key Stage 3. Also, Key Stage 4 and Post-16 students are able to follow courses in Dance, Drama, Music, Music Technology and Performing Arts.
Dance is delivered in two dedicated Dance Studios, run by two full-time teachers of Dance. Students experience a wide range of Dance styles and also have the opportunity to work with a range of professional dancers, many of which regularly perform on the West End stage
Students studying Drama work in a suite of three studios, one of which is a fully equipped performance studio with lighting and sound rigs. The school hall possesses a traditional stage with excellent lighting facilities and acoustics. A major production takes place every year in the Spring Term, often with a ‘cast of hundreds
Music offers its own suite of rooms and a range of traditional, modern and ethnic instruments. The work of our Music staff is supported by a strong team of peripatetic teachers, giving individual lessons to over 150 students per week. Students can join the School Choir, Brass and String Ensembles, Jazz and Wind bands. We also run a Rock School and our own version of the percussion group ‘STOMP’.
PERFORMING ARTS COURSE OUTLINE
The course is divided into three parts which are weighted equally
1. Exploring skills for performance (in either dance or drama)
2. Planning for an event (marketing and management)
3. Performing to a commission (in either dance, drama or music)
- Three hours per week are devoted to practical activities whilst theoretical content is delivered in the remaining time.
- Three specialist teachers deliver the course.
- Students must be willing to attempt all three domains although they can opt for which area of performance they wish to be assessed in.
- Opportunities to visit theatre companies and work with professional actors and choreographers will be available.
- Those who express an interest in the course will be invited to participate in an induction week in the first week of July. The result will be a performance to family, friends and staff on the final day of the course.
